Steyn makes it a triple

Monday, 20 July 2009 Andrea Steyn Teavigo

High Performance Centre Physiotherapist Andrea Steyn added a third major title to her repertoire on Saturday 18 July when she ran away with the South African Duathlon Title, despite a niggling calf strain, to add to the SA Triathlon Title and African Triathlon title she won in March and July respectively.
Held in cold conditions on and around the Free State University Campus, Steyn had a virtual time trial as she hit the front of the race within the first km of the 10km run leg and was never challenged.

The race was broken down into a 10km run of 4 laps of 2.5km, a 40km bike ride and then 2 more loops of the 2.5km run leg to make up the 55km race.

The run laps were held on the University sports fields, and so were virtually cross country.

Steyn covered the 10km in 41min and 37 seconds, had a lightening fast transition and was out on the bike leg of 4 by 10km loops around the campus. As this was a non-draft legal race the chances of her being caught on the bike leg were very slim indeed. The 40km were covered in just over an hour and ten minutes (1:10:38) before tackling the last 5km run which Andrea covered in 22min 30sec for a combined time of 2hr14min45sec to claim the South African Duathlon Title of 2009.

Steyn said after the race, after treating her injured calf to an ice bath, that she would see to the treatment of the calf and then decide if she would tackle the next Momentum Health Teavigo Duathlon race in Hartbeespoort on Sunday 2 August. Steyn heads the overall standings of the series with a total of 98 out of a possible 100 points after only two defeats in the five races she has competed in.
