Durban Ultra gateway to get into triathlon racing
Durban – With the sport of triathlon undergoing a global resurgence, South African triathletes of all abilities are looking forward to the MiWay Durban Ultra Triathlon on Sunday 4 March 2018, centred on the Durban beachfront.
While the event will attract the cream of the country’s ultra-triathletes as it hosts the SA Ultra Triathlon Champs for 2018, the Sprint event already shows signs of a sold-out entry as an ideal entry to major triathlons.
“We are in a position to offer the athletes, from serious elite title contenders to relative newcomers to triathlon, the best of race conditions,” said event director Damian Bradley.
“We specifically stage the event at the beginning of March as the weather conditions in Durban are usually fantastic and reliable. The sea is normally flat and the weather is warm and we are out of the intense summer heat.
“We have the wonderful luxury of full road closure to ensure the safety of every single participant,” he added.
The big change for 2018 will also concentrate all the energy of the event on a single site on the Durban beachfront, which is steeped in triathlon history.
“We have set up what we call the “Hot Zone” on the Durban beachfront,” explained Bradley. “In one place fans can watch all the transitions and the finish of the race. The route itself is very spectator friendly and we anticipate thousands to watch the event on the day.
“Durban as a city has always been incredibly supportive of triathlons,” he said. “The city has so many hotel beds for major sporting events and with the MiWay Durban Ultra Triathlon being based on the beachfront, most of those hotels are within walking distance.”
Bradley said the event was an ideal way for social athletes and ‘weekend warriors’ to experience a top class triathlon.
“The run on the beachfront is flat and fast, and the bike leg is on super quality roads up the coast and back on the M4,” he explained.
“The Sprint event is very do-able, and consists of a 600m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run, and to make to even more accessible, you can enter in a team with one member of the team taking on one of the legs of the triathlon, making it great fun for a corporate team entry,” he added.
Entries close on 1 February 2018. standard for world class event organisation,” he commented. “Proudly South African.”
