SA elite ladies perform in Asian and World triathlon cups
Salinas world triathlon sprint cup
South African triathlete Gill Sanders finished 15th at the Salinas sprint world cup triathlon on Sunday 21st October 2018. After a non-wetsuit beach start, Sanders swam a 10:11 for the 750m swim along the Ecuador coastline with a 46 second deficit on the leaders out the water. After an incredible cycle effort, her time of 29:45 for the 20km bike leg was the third fastest on the day. Sanders caught the leading group going into the final discipline. Onto the run, Sanders ended the 5km course in 17:20, placing her 15th with a finish time of 59:12. The race was won by Ukrainian Yuliya Yelistratova in a time of 58:19.
Hong Kong Asian triathlon cup
New Zealand based South African triathlete Simone Ackerman finished 8th at the Sunny Bay, Hong Kong Asian triathlon sprint cup on Sunday, 21st October 2018. With a non-wetsuit swim time of 10:08, Ackerman came out the water in 5th place, only 6 seconds behind the leader. Onto the undulating 20km cycle, Ackerman cycled with the leading seven women in a time of 32 minutes. Feeling the effects of a phenomenal swim-bike no doubt, Ackerman’s first run back at continental cup racing level after sustaining an injury at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year was not to her usual standards understandably. Ackerman finished the run in a time of 20:04, in 8th place and a total time of 1:04:59. Hungarian Zsófia Kovács won the race in a time of 1:02:52.
