PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (18 June 2018) – Following a successful event in 2017, the Standard Bank 5150 African Triathlon Series is back in Bela Bela for the eighth consecutive year. The course is deemed as one of the favourites in the series. Bela Bela offers a bushveld experience like no other with perfect race conditions. The race is set to take place on Saturday, 4 August 2018 at Warmbaths, A Forever Resort.
The 5150 triathlon (pronounced, fifty-one-fifty) takes the format of an Olympic distance triathlon featuring a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run. Widely regarded as an ideal introduction distance into competitive triathlon, the Standard Bank 5150 Bela Bela course starts with a 1.5km swim in the ski dam, 40 km bike northbound on the hilly D10-Alma Road and lastly an undulating 10km run course in the resort. The bushveld resort setting makes the race a great triathlon weekend get-away and is close enough for the large Gauteng triathlon community to travel to, while providing the ideal setting for an African getaway to international athletes.
In addition to the Olympic distance, this event is known as the FUNTRI. The FUNTRI is a shorter distance, especially designed to give triathlon novices and anyone with an interest in the sport – a glimpse into the spectacular tri-world. Featuring a 400-metre swim, 20km bike and 5km run, the FUNTRI sets the scene for a fun, non-threatening environment with relaxed rules. The FUNTRI will be available to athletes 14 years and older. Team entries are available with 2 or 3 people per team.
Keith Bowler, Managing Director of IRONMAN South Africa said: “We are delighted to continue to run this event as it grows our triathlon family. The spirit and camaraderie at these Olympic and FUNTRI distances is fantastic. This is the perfect setting for you to try out the sport.”
Warmbaths, A Forever Resorts features a range of activities including water skiing, quad biking, private game reserve drives, water slides and naturally heated outdoor pools, as well as a spa and indoor/outdoor hydro with therapeutic natural springs for the ultimate post-race relaxation.
