End-of-Summer SUN CITY Sprint Triathlon has it all for novices!
Whether you are a newbie looking to ‘tri’ a sprint triathlon and have some fun, or if you are winding down your training for winter, the SUN CITY ULTRA is ideally placed in May to deliver on both.
Having successfully been staged for the last 3 years at what is arguably SA’s best holiday-race destination, The Sun City Resort, this race is a must-do on the yearly triathlon calendar.
Sun City is located less than 90 minutes’ drive from the hub of triathlon in JHB, making this event easily accessible to the masses who normally travel up on the Friday or Saturday before the race and make a weekend out of it. With the family and friends tagging along for the ride, a weekend geared up for some great sport as well as all round fun and family entertainment are what make this event so unique. The resort complex has that paradise feel to it which makes racing in and around the area so appealing.
The SUN CITY ULTRA hosts the biggest sprint triathlon in South Africa with just under 1000 triathletes having completed the event in 2018. A sell-out field of close to 1100 Sprint Triathletes are expected in MAY which will cement its status as the no 1 Sprint Distance Triathlon in the land.
The Sprint triathletes will complete the 600m dam swim followed by a flat 20km cycle which then ends with an equally flat 5km run around the Gary Player golf course. At this time of year, the weather is pristine with mild temperatures and little or no wind out on the bike course. This is the ideal opportunity novices and newcomers to the world of triathlons to compete over an easy course, this race has all the ingredients for an action packed-fun triathlon event.
The Ultra Distance Triathletes who start their event about 30 minutes after the last Sprint Triathlete leaves the water, have a 2 lap swim in store for them, making up the 1.9km swim distance. This is followed by 2 laps of 45km each on the bike. Competitors will be pleased to know that they will only climb the infamous Sun City Hill back into the resort one time as the turn-around point on the bike is situated down by the main Sun City entrance gate.
The Ultra Race run leg is truly unique with 90% of it, being run over two of the world best known golf courses. The first part of the run is a gradual climb up to the Lost City Hotel after which athletes will drop down fast back to T2 to start lap 2 which will give them the 21.1km run distance.
The run course is very spectator friendly and whilst the athletes are plying their trade out on the roads, the kids and family can spend time at the hotel pools soaking in the last bit of sunshine and warm weather before the Highveld Winter kicks in at the start of June.
The Sun City Ultra is a last-throw-of-the-dice race for those that need a little rest during the winter period as well as that that go into hibernation before the season picks up again in September. For the few that are travelling to Durban for the Half in June, this event is also ideally placed at the right time for athletes to test their fitness levels under race conditions. Most of the well-established and experienced triathlon coaches will send their athletes to The Sun City Ultra as a last race tester before they all go into taper mode heading into the 70.3 in Durban.
