Tinman #4 sees Van Der Merwe victorious despite format change

B-active’s fourth and final Tinman race for the year took place on the 28th October 2018 in Durban. Scores of triathletes took to the water several hundred meters further away from the usual swim start for safety reasons. Athletes then swam, completed a longer 1,5km run into transition 1 before mounting their bicycles for a 30km cycle and finally rolling out onto the run course of the challenge and sprint triathlons. In the challenge triathlon, Pieterjan van der Merwe claimed the victory, staying near the front of the race throughout and clocking a 1:37:02. Gauteng-based van der Merwe was followed over the finish line by local athlete, Roger Mortlock, in a time of 1:37:55. Rounding off the podium was Gauteng-based Casper Moodie in a time of 1:39:26. The ladies’ podium consisted of Desiree Verwey in first, with a time of 1:59:02. Second was claimed by Linda Potts in a time of 2:02:11. Bronze was awarded to Leah Sloman in a time of 2:10:10.

In the sprint triathlon, following the same format as the challenge of swim-run-bike-run, Haig Gibb was the fastest of the bunch, finishing in a time 0f 1:09:50 followed by Brad Venter in second, clocking a 1:09:59. Third place was awarded to Josh Wiborg, who completed the race in a time of 1:11:30. The first lady in of the sprint triathletes was junior elite triathlete Brigitte Theunissen in a time of 1:18:05 followed by Tegan Gore in a time of 1:19:29. Nix O’Driscoll claimed the bronze medal with a time of 1:29:18.
