Team Selection

TSA SELECTION CRITERIA
2024 OLYMPIC GAMES

Summary

As previously informed, TSA has decided to primarily focus on the Mixed Relay as the qualification pathway for athletes to participate at the Games. To give more clarity on the selection process and criteria to be applied for selection for the Mixed Relay team (and other selection options), the following criteria will apply in descending selection category order of priority:

A. Mixed Relay
  1. In accordance with the TRI requirements, an athlete must be ranked on the TRI Olympic qualification ranking within the top 140 on 27 May 2024. An athlete ranked outside of the aforesaid, despite the below qualification, will not be selected.
  2. An athlete with a top 10 finish in a World Series event or a podium finish in a World Cup event, in the second qualification period will automatically qualify for selection for the Mixed Relay team. In the event of more than two athletes so eligible for selection, the TRI Olympic ranking on 27 May 2024 will be the determining factor.
  3. Athletes outside of automatic qualification as per A.2, will compete head-tohead in the following three events. Points will be allocated to the prospective athletes at each event based on their finish position amongst the competing prospective athletes only. The same points allocation will apply for each event: 18 February 2024 – 2024 Africa Triathlon Cup Maselspoort (Sprint); 23 March 2024 – 2024 Africa Triathlon Cup Swakopmund (Sprint); 6 April 2024 – 2024 Africa Triathlon Premier Cup Nelson Mandela Bay (Standard). * In the event of a bona fide mechanical or medical circumstance (immediately prior) or during an event and subject to satisfactory proof of such circumstance provided to the HPC, the HPC may award the average points of the other two races to such compromised athlete. (This discression will only apply to one event.)
  4. In the event of a points tie, the finish position of the Nelson Mandela Bay event will be the determining factor.

Based on the accumulative points of the three events, the top point scoring athletes in each gender (subject to the priority qualification of A.2 above), will be selected to compete in the once off Mixed Relay slot qualification race, 2024 World Triathlon Cup Huatulco (19 May 2024). Subject to an Olympic qualification slot, the same team will be selected to compete in both the individual event and the relay event at the Olympic Games.

B. Individual Slot
  1. In accordance with the TRI requirements, an athlete must be ranked on the TRI Olympic qualification ranking within the top 140 on 27 May 2024. An athlete ranked outside of the aforesaid, despite the below qualification, will not be selected.
  2. Failing a Mixed Relay slot qualification, an athlete qualifying for an individual slot as per the Olympic ranking on 27 May 2024, will be selected provided such athlete did compete in the Mixed Relay slot qualification race in Huatulco. If an athlete is selected for Huatulco but did not compete for whatever reason, such athlete will forfeit selection and the slot will roll down to the next qualifying athlete (if any) on the Olympic ranking.
C. New Flag
  1. In accordance with the TRI requirements, an athlete must be ranked on the World Triathlon Ranking within the top 180 on 27 May 2024.
  2. In the event of a slot awarded to South Africa for the individual competition, the criteria as per A.3 will apply provided such athlete did compete (if selected) in the Mixed Relay slot qualification race in Huatulco. If selected for Huatulco but did not compete for whatever reason, such athlete will forfeit selection and such slot will roll down to the next highest point scorer in terms of A.3.
D. General
  1. Should a selected athlete for the Games of the Mixed Relay team, Individual slot or New Flag slot not be able to participate, the next eligible athlete (on roll down) will be selected based on A.3 (subject to A.1, B.1 or C.1 as applicable).
  2. In the event of a slot allocation to South Africa, with no athlete eligible for selection in terms of this criteria, TSA will select an athlete within TSA’s sole discression on performance merit as on 27 May 2024.
  3. Selected athletes remain subject to SASCOC final selection and participation criteria.
